Before I forget, check out our post on our Facebook page about coffee roasts and flavor! http://tiny.cc/roastpost What's your favorite roast?
Now on to all the important things on hand! The Farmer's Market is just days away! I placed my order for coffee so we will have tons of freshly roasted goodness available Saturday morning. I also had to decide what we were going to be brewing that morning, and I think I've got it narrowed down to the Columbia Cafe Femenino and the Davis Mountain Blend. In case you are not acquainted with our coffee, we get a beautiful organic fair trade coffee from Big Bend Roasters - and it is roasted in Marfa Texas! You can't get anything roasted that close to Midland unless you roast your own! The coffee we bring to the Midland Downtown Farmer's Market was roasted TODAY - so by the time you see us on Saturday it will still be the freshest coffee in town!
So now a little about our coffee selection for this weekend. The Colombian is a well balanced, medium-bodied, honey-sweet coffee. Produced by a co-op of courageous women in a region infamous for coca and violence, a portion of the proceeds from this Cafe Femenino are used to support these women coffee farmers. Because it is fresh from Big Bend Roasters and has not been sitting around in a coffee bin at the grocery store, the brew has almost no aftertaste. The women who are a part of the Cafe Femenino are mostly small farmers, many of whom grow under the shade of larger trees, which imparts a more diverse flavor into the coffee beans. This is probably what sets this Colombian coffee apart from most other Colombian coffees - which have a tendency to be a bit boring. This Cafe Femenino is far from boring. I think you will like it, especially if you are looking for a traditional cup of coffee (with just a bit more of those interesting flavors that set a good cup of coffee apart from a plain old cup of coffee.)
Now to our next selection, the Davis Mountain Blend... From the rugged mountains of South America to the splendor of the Jeff Davis Mountains come a perfectly blended one-of-a-kind coffee. This medium-bodied, honey-sweet coffee with a smooth nutty finish is a sure winner. If you read our post on our FaceBook fan page (see link above) about roasts, this is somewhere between an American Light Roast and a Medium City Roast - which you'll know balances the flavors and gives it a deep (yummy) aroma. I can't think of anything better to serve up with your breakfast in the morning, but it is also versatile enough to follow you through the day (which is not something you can say about all breakfast blends.)
I think you will enjoy both our selections this week, and we'll have a good supply of freshly roasted coffee (including the Colombian and Davis Mountain Blend) on hand for you to buy to take home. Don't forget, we have sample cups in case you want to 'try before you buy'!
Before I sign off, I want to urge you all to head out to the Midland Downtown Farmer's Market this Saturday - not only for our Organic Fair Trade Big Bend Roasters coffee, but because the bounty of the market is in full swing and you don't want to miss out on all the flavors! Just this evening we enjoyed some delicious oven fried zucchini, made with zucchini I bought at the market. Even though it sat in my refrigerator from Saturday, this was still the most delicious and tasty squash I have had in ages! We also had an unbelievably tender chuck steak from YT Beef. Let me just say that for all my mother's worrying about chuck steak being tough, I have to say that we did not have a steak knife on the table (on oversight of the hubby which was not intended) and we were ALL able to cut through that steak with a BUTTER KNIFE! Seriously, who does that in this economy? Finds a steak you can cut with a butter knife for under $15 a pound???
Some of the things you will want to look for this weekend at the Market are... Dog biscuits!!!! Okay, I'm totally sold on these things because Miss India my precious (90 lb. 10 year old) pup, likes them and I don't have to make my own any more! If you want dog cookies that you don't have to worry about feeding YOUR furry baby - come on down and grab a bag from K9 Cottage Cookie Company.
I bet you may even have a chance to get some fresh herbs this weekend too... I got a glorious bouquet of fresh basil last weekend and learned a secret I did not know - how to keep it from going limp and useless in a day! Don't put it in the refrigerator!!! WHO KNEW!!! I kept my fragrant little bouquet on the window sill in my kitchen in fresh water and picked from it all week. I still have quite a bit left which will end up in a delicious Cappellini Pomodoro for this Friday's dinner (and I bet it will be every bit as firm and fresh as it was Saturday if I can judge by the way it looks today!) My eternal gratitude to the farming guru and organizer of the Midland Downtown Farmer's Market - FARMER MATT!
Now that I have written so much your eyeballs are probably falling out of your head, I will say Au revoir until this weekend! We hope you'll come on down to the Farmer's Market and see what they have to offer, there should be some delicious cantaloupes and maybe even a watermelon there, and of course all of our regular vendors with honey and crafts and SO MUCH MORE!

Fresh Flavor at the Midland Downtown Farmer's Market!
Friday, July 2, 2010
Well, we are getting ready for the Farmer's Market tomorrow morning. It's probably going to be wet, but rain or shine we will be there brewing! I mean really, what is better to warm you up than a nice hot steamy cup of coffee? I just got a shipment of coffee that was roasted (and ground where applicable!) for us on Wednesday, you can't get any fresher than that unless you do it yourself! We even have one bag of whole bean Conjunto coffee (a lively blend of South American coffees - YUM!) Look forward to seeing you there, and remember - to get the best produce and delicacies you have to beat the early bird and get there early!
The Midland Downtown Farmer's Market opens at 9:00 sharp!

We are going to be starting something new down at the Midland Brew Crew (Saturdays at the Midland Downtown Farmer's Market.) We want to be the place where you can get the freshest coffee you have ever tasted, and to do that we have to clear out some of our older stock. So this weekend we are going to have some of our coffee that was roasted in March and April of this year on sale for $9.00! That saves you $2.00 on each bag!
Now there is nothing at all wrong with these bags of coffee - in fact most coffee you will find on the shelves at the grocery store are MUCH older than what we have on sale this weekend, but we are going to try to have coffee available to you that was roasted just days before you find them out on our table at the Midland Downtown Farmer's Market! You can find the freshest produce at the Midland Downtown Farmer's Market and now you'll also find the freshest coffee!
Stop by and see us this weekend, we'll have our coffee (a fresh batch will be arriving here at the Brew Crew Compound later today!) and we'll have steamy hot coffee brewed and ready for you to ward off the gray and rainy morning we are supposed to have. We'll have our lemonade and teas too - for when the morning turns steamy when the sun finally peeks out!
See you there! Rain or shine we'll be brewing!
